Staff training and sign language video content create safer, clearer, and more enjoyable travel experiences

Air travel should be safe, clear, and dignified for all passengers – regardless of communication barriers. This need inspired the project “Accessibility of Passenger Information for People with Hearing Impairments”, which brings important improvements to four Croatian airports: Osijek, Split, Rijeka, and Pula.
The project developed two key steps towards greater inclusion:
- Staff training through interactive workshops and communication exercises, to ensure better interaction with deaf and hard-of-hearing passengers.
- Video content in Croatian Sign Language (HZJ) and International Sign (IS), providing simple explanations of terminal procedures, safety instructions, as well as welcome messages and highlights of each airport and its city.
Special focus has been placed on the International Week of the Deaf, held this year from 22 to 28 September, with a dedicated set of video messages prepared for the occasion.
To ensure lasting knowledge, a brochure for employees has also been created – a practical guide including information about Deaf culture, real-life examples, communication tips, and useful phrases for everyday work.
The project was realized through the joint efforts of the airports of Osijek, Split, Rijeka, and Pula, with strong support from the Ministry of Tourism and Sport, the Croatian Sports Association of the Deaf, and the Split Sports Association of the Deaf.
